How Do I Learn English Like A Maven?

This is part 2 of our series on ‘How do I learn English?’ In this lesson, I want to tell you a little about the best English students I’ve met over the years…that I call mavens.

So, first, let’s go ahead and define the word ‘maven‘ so you know what it means…because words can have different meanings in different contexts.

I want to define how we’re going to be using the word ‘maven’ in the context answering ‘How do I learn English’ for those who are learning English as a Second Language.

How Do I Learn English Like A Maven?

Today the word ‘maven’ is currently synonymous with the word ‘guru’. A guru is someone who is an influential leader in their circle. It is someone who has reached a certain status due to their wisdom or knowledge. Others aspire to be like them or look up to them when they need help.

So, we’re going to use the word ‘maven’ in the context of English learning to refer to someone who has already learned English fluently and proficiently. They’ve already answered the question, ‘How do I learn English?’ themselves…and can now help you.

So, in this sense we use maven to refer to English students who can understand what English speakers are saying and can express themselves well in English.

Can I Be An English Maven Too?

Well, the fact is…you already are a maven! The word maven originates from Hebrew and refer to one who is a seeker of knowledge and wisdom. So, we’re also going to be using the word ‘maven’ to refer to those who are seeking knowledge on how to learn the English language so that they can  communicate fluently and proficiently.

So, yes…in a way…you are already a maven too even if you are still asking yourself, ‘How do I learn English?’.

That means we’ll be using the word ‘maven’ to refer to those who are learning English as well as to refer to those who have already learned English fluently.So, through the context you’ll know if we’re referring to one who is learning English or if we’re referring to someone who has already mastered the English language.

But mostly we will be referring to those who have already learned English fluently and proficiently…those who you are seeking to model in your quest to discover ‘how do I learn English’.

How do I learn English? –  Key Factors To Success

Understanding what these English mavens did to learn fluent English. It will help you answer the question, ‘How do I learn English?’ for yourself.

Because, as I traveled around different countries, I met many people who had already learned English fluently. I interviewed them to find out what they had done to learn how to speak excellent English and how they had answered the question ‘How do I learn English’.

Also, as I observed my English students, I noticed that there were 3 key factors to their success…which is what I want to share with you as you answer the question ‘How do I learn English’?
